  • Description: The Laboratório de Biotecnologia de Plantas (LABPLAN) carries out studies related to in vitro plant cultivation since 1989, with emphasis on species of medicinal interest, using techniques of cell and tissue culture such as micropropagation and organ and calluses cultures and cell suspensions. It is also involved in germplasm conservation, especially by the application of cryopreservation techniques. The methods proposed allow a continuous supply, and the standardization of the production of plants and secondary metabolites, when compared to traditional methods, show a great potential to the generation of processes and biotechnological products, while also increasing substances of interest and reducing the time of obtention. In addition, cryopreservation allows long-term preservation of in vitro germplasm. The LABPLAN is an Unit of Technological Development with research, teaching and extension activities, working with students (from high schoolers to postgraduates) with interest in plant biotechnology.

  • Description: The Laboratório de Ecologia e Fisiologia do Fitoplâncton (LABALGAS) carries out research in continental phytoplankton ecology since 2005 and its projects aim, through field and laboratory studies, to determine the main phytoplankton associations. These ecological studies are focused on functional groups (associations), which are based in ecological, morphological and physiological attributes of the species that, potentially and alternatively, may dominate or codominat the system. The main focus is the cyanobacteria group that has become dominante in eutrophic systems. The laboratory carries out experimental trials to study the main ecophysiological characters of cyanobacteria strains, aiming to identify the factors that control their growth, in order to better understand the controlling mechanisms of cyanobacteria flourishing in reservoirs and to support the control of environmental and public health problems related to these flourishings.
